Having read the article "Hidden Salt a Risk to Children" (Health Action, Summer 2009, www.hans.org), I am once again reminded of the importance of maintaining a keen eye and critical disposition when it comes to food selection at the supermarket. With cardiovascular disease topping off the list of leading causes of death in Canada, it should come as no surprise that excessive salt is thought to be responsible for 30% of high blood pressure, 14% of strokes and 9% of heart attacks in our country. 75% of our daily salt intake is derived from processed food. The next time I have a craving for some potato chips I’ll just remind myself that 77% of children, 85% of men and 60 percent of women exceed their daily recommended levels of sodium. Maybe a packet of instant noodle or a box of salted crackers should be labeled with warning clauses of “High sodium, may cause heart disease” just as like we have with the surgeon general’s warning on cigarette packs!
