Mainstream media loves getting the public excited (and angry) about nutrients. There was the Omega-3 craze; the soy cycle; the green tea fade, to name only a handful of passé sexy nutrients that are now being put out to pasture. And yet, we continue to listen.
Too much flax? Adding it to our cereals, yogurts, shakes, cakes, and tea, is a wonderful way to maintain health – for those of us that will not develop gastrointestinal problems (gas, bloating irritation) from flax overconsumption.
How about soy overkill? Just wait a few more years when the male babies that have been brought up on soy reach puberty and discover that too much soy increases estrogen and decreases testosterone. Man boobs – not so attractive anymore.
I say hoorah Vitamin D, your time has finally come to shine (literally) in the limelight! However, let’s not forget about all the other nutrients that share the burden of keeping us healthy. A poor diet, unhealthy lifestyle, lack of sleep, will all contribute to poor health, and assuming Vitamin D will be able to take on the role of Supervitamin in such a battered body, is too much to ask for.
Mainstream media just doesn’t get it. Better yet, they don’t get it cause it suits their needs just fine. When Vitamin D ends up causing harm (due to the scientific backlash and false accusations customary after a nutrient rises to stardom) the media will have the perfect scapegoat to admonish.
